This course is tailored for professional and junior makeup artists, as well as workshop hair technicians, looking to enhance their skills in facial hair work and realistic beard design.Mastering these techniques will enable participants to create a variety of looks, from period characters and ethnic identities to characters that reflect different ages, moods, fashion trends, and religious beliefs.

Participants will gain the skills to create facial hair—such as beards, mustaches, sideburns, and eyebrows—applied directly to the actor’s skin or pre-made on Baldiez for custom or generic applications. These techniques can be used for natural looks or integrated with prosthetics for specialized or fantasy designs.

Additionally, the course will provide a deeper understanding of design processes, costs, and timing, enabling artists to effectively discuss creative decisions with producers and directors.

The course will last 4 days, divided into 4 training modules of 8 hours.Each training module consists of two parts: Introduction and demonstration of the topic, hands-on practice.

PROGRAM

• Day 1 DESIGNING THE BEARD
• Demo – Application of a hand laid beard with combined techniques: hand laid and pre-made piece on Baldiez.
• Different types of hair: natural and synthetic hair. When, why and how to use it.
• Template: designing the shape of the beard and transfer on acetate sheet.
• Tools and techniques to make a pre-made hair piece.
• Hands on practice: trainee will create a generic hair piece on Baldiez.

• Day 2 APPLICATION, CUTTING AND STYLING
• Adapting and applying the pre-made hair piece and completing the beard by hand laying it. Trainee work on each other.
• Cutting and styling the beard.
• Hands on practice: trainee work on apply the beard working on each other.

• Day 3 DEMO – SHORT BEARDS, STUBBLE AND AGING WITH MULTIPLE TECHNIQUES
• hand laying short hair, laminating hair insert, stubble, blending transition from long to short beard.
• Trainees will design a bearded character for their final project, making a partial pre-made hair piece backed on Baldiez.

• Day 4 FINAL STUDENT PROJECT
• Execution of a full beard combining hand laying hair , pre-made piece on Baldiez, cutting and styling it turning it in two different styles going from a modern look to a period look or viceversa.

• Thinning scissors
• Paper scissors (inexpensive)
• Forked comb, tail comb, cutting comb (with narrow side for mustaches)
• Disposable cutting cape
• Stove, Marcel iron (facial hair tong)
• Sectioning clips
• Art brushes (medium to large, inexpensive)
• Beauty brushes (basic kit)
• MAC Blot Powder (medium, medium dark) or any translucent non-colored powder
• Straight pins (medium)
• Wire drawing boards (recommended)
• Permanent markers (medium & small, two colors)
• Paper tape, Sellotape
• Brown and red lip/pencil
• Alcohol palette (browns, black, skin tones)
