What are Caged Wigs?

Caged wigs are sculptural, gravity-defying hair forms built on custom-shaped wire and 3D frameworks. The internal cage acts as a structural base that supports shape, volume, and balance, allowing for stable yet highly expressive designs. These structures are lightweight yet strong, and create the foundation for bold, architectural hair work — from organic curves to fantasy-inspired silhouettes such as hearts, horns, and Rococo forms.

This masterclass introduces a specialised approach to sculptural wig styling developed by Las Vegas–based wig artist Annie Hardt. The focus lies in building and working with wire cage structures as the foundation for controlled, three-dimensional wig design that remains wearable for performance and on-set use.

Across two days, participants are guided through the complete process of constructing, balancing, and integrating a wire cage into a wig. The work continues into structured styling techniques, exploring how hair behaves on a three-dimensional base and how form, tension, and direction influence the final result.

The aim of the workshop is to establish strong technical foundations that support both precision and creative decision-making. Participants develop practical skills in structure building, styling control, and problem-solving, enabling them to adapt the technique to a range of creative and professional contexts.

This workshop is designed for artists who want to expand their practice into structured wig construction and explore a method that connects technical engineering with contemporary hair design.

Day 1 — Foundation & Cage Construction

The first day concentrates on understanding materials and building the structural base of the wig.

  • Introduction to tools, materials, and application methods for different scenarios
  • Measuring, shaping, and constructing a wire cage framework
  • Techniques for connecting and stabilising the structure
  • Covering the cage with fabric and securing it through stitching methods
  • Preparing the wig: roller setting techniques and understanding pattern direction
  • Wig steaming process to set structure and shape overnight

Day 2 — Integration & Styling

The second day focuses on transforming the structure into a finished, styled piece.

  • Attaching and balancing the cage securely onto the wig
  • Methods for ensuring durability and stability for performance and on-set use
  • Advanced styling techniques: waves, ringlets, and structured curl patterns
  • Individual guidance to support personal design development
  • Problem-solving and adapting structures to different creative ideas
  • Incorporating design elements such as accessories and finishes
  • Final preparation: securing wigs for high-intensity performance environments
