This 2-day practical workshop focuses on creative and efficient styling techniques for curly and coiled hair textures. The hands-on experience encourages stylists to play, experiment, and refine their styling skills—whether you’re aiming for clean, quick commercial looks or editorial-level artistry. Perfect for those working in Film/TV, session styling, or commercial work, the workshop builds confidence and creativity in handling textured hair with purpose and style.

This workshop is ideal for professional hairstylists who have basic experience working with textured hair. 

You should be familiar with: 

• Hair preparation 
• Heat styling (blow drying, straightening) 
• Coil/curl defining techniques 

Note: If you’re completely new to working with textured hair, we recommend attending our 3- Day Afro Hair Fundamentals course first.

By the end of this workshop, you will: 

• Learn fast, effective hair preparation methods for curly/coiled textures 
• Practice seamless transitions between styles within a short timeframe 
• Explore the use of hair pieces, padding, and accessories 
• Understand product selection and usage for different styling stages 
• Gain hands-on experience working on training heads and live models

PROGRAM

Day 1: Technique & Transition Practice (Training Heads) 

Focus: Hair Prep | Product Knowledge | Seamless Transitions 

• Introduction & Objectives 
• Understanding Hair Prep: natural or heat styling 
• Product Knowledge: What to use, when, and why 
• Tool Techniques: Brushes, dryers, clips, and styling aids 
• Quick Style Changes: Techniques to transform a look fast 
• Practice: Create 3 transitional looks on training heads 
• Q&A and Group Discussio

Goal: Build confidence and speed in style transitions on textured hair. 

Day 2: Hands-On Creative Application (Live Models) 

Focus: Customization | Adaptability | Styling with Intuition 

• Recap of Day 1 Learnings 
• Introduction to Live Model Work: Assessing Hair Texture & Type 
• Customizing Looks: Adjusting your technique for individual models 
• Practical: Recreate and refine your 3 looks on a live model 
• Feedback, Troubleshooting, and Final Styling Showcase 
• Wrap-Up & Creative Discussion

Goal: Apply your knowledge to real-world hair, building adaptability and creative expression.

Styling Equipment: 

• Hair dryer with all attachments (including diffuser & afro pick)
• Assorted combs: tail, wide tooth, pin tail, large styling comb 
• Brushes: Denman (large & small), soft dressing, paddle, round, boar bristle
• Clips: sectioning, duckbill, non-crease
• Pins & Grips: various sizes 
• Hair scissors & synthetic hair cutting scissors 
• Edge styling brush 
• Hair straighteners 
• Elasticated thread (2mm black), small elastic bands 
• Spray water bottle 
• Fabric mesh diffuser 
• Hair Accessories (Optional but Encouraged): 
• Hair padding & doughnuts (various sizes) 
• Hairpieces/extensions for styling 
• Accessories for creative styling (clips, beads, scarves, etc.)

All styling products will be provided during the class. If you have your own training head, feel free to bring it and take your finished look home.

MICHELLE GARANDE

Michelle Garande is a renowned Hair Educator and Hairstylist specializing in Afro and Multi-textured hair. Since starting her hairdressing career in 2012, Michelle has left a lasting impact on the Afro hairdressing industry. Since 2018, she has been providing Afro hairstyling education to leading universities, colleges, and academies across the UK, catering to students entering the realms of Film, TV, Theatre, Fashion, and salon industries.

Michelle collaborates with top West End shows, offering training and consultancy services to wig teams and hair and makeup departments for TV and film productions. Her mission is to ensure that her students gain the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience to excel as experts and specialists in styling, dressing, and caring for Afro and multi-textured hair. Michelle is also the visionary founder of the GARANDE Academy located in North London.
